Three things will sneak up on you in this life:

Car problems; dentist appointments; and packages from Dave K (aka A Fiend On Film).

I met Dave online many years ago, back when me and Billy Crash recorded The Last Knock horror podcast on a weekly basis. He was – and remains – our #1 Heckler on social media, and popped up as a guest on our show on three separate occasions.

Over the years, he’s helped me up my sarcasm game. So thanks, sensei.

Dave is a filmmaker, graphic artist, and zine creator (I’ve contributed to several of his, and have the physical copies to prove it). After communicating online for many years, we finally met in person earlier this year (at the Matt Summers benefit show in Philly).

I recently picked up his book Coeurs Noirs, a collection of Film Noir movie ads from the 1940s – ’50s.

And about 2 weeks ago, I received an unexpected care package from a familiar return address.

I’ve received several of these over the years, and their contents are usually a total mystery. I debated tearing open the box like an excited kid on Christmas morning when I received it, but held off until after work.

So…in lieu of one of those thrilling “unboxing” videos, I offer a photographic progression through “A Dave K Care Package.”

Right away, a Half Price Books tote taunts me (we don’t have them in PA)! But what lies beneath?
Bubble wrap…a stack-o-movies in classy paper sleeves…something that says ‘books’…all marks of a quality care package.
Stack-o-movies #1…
(blurry) Stack-o-movies #2…(blur-ray?)
But wait…there’s more!
Dave K’s B&W photos of NYC architecture, and a feline-centric bookmark (for another store I must visit someday)!
As we return to our colorized existence, more movies and two book selections.

Dave K is on Twitter and Instagram, where you can follow the progress of his forthcoming book of movie reviews, Lowest Common Denominator, among other creative (misad)ventures.

In the meantime, check out his debut short film, Death Comes Twice.

NICE! Alas, Half Price Books is a Texas creation. We have many here now, and a giant one about 15 minutes away in Dallas proper. However, I liked them much more when they were small and few and far between. Back then there was one crammed into a little strip center near me in Garland. And it was also crammed with books on over-stuffed shelves lining winding narrow corridors. I bought many books from them back when reading a book was the only way yo do research––back when I was researching all the history for PUZZLEMAN. Those were great days when I hoped to find a treasure on a dark shelf, and often did. HPB before Google and cellphones––what a helluva time. It took hard work, time, and imagination, to learn something new and to find that special used book (cheap) that would help you make progress. Now HPB is the home of endless Stephen King overstock and every other popular overstock. I almost never shop there anymore. Now all the book gold is on eBay, Abe Books, Biblio, and elsewhere.
